GLUTEN FREE GUIDE TO EDINBURGH FRINGE FESTIVAL
A GUIDE TO EDINBURGH’S FRINGE FESTIVAL
Disclaimer: ALWAYS mention you are coeliac before ordering, never just choose the gluten free item on the menu. Chefs don’t want to make you ill, and with the knowledge of your allergy will take care and attention when preparing your food.
SUPPORT SMALL BUSINESSES when visiting Edinburgh. Chain restaurants don’t add any personality to the city and often don’t use local products to make their food. Look out for local versions of chains wherever possible.
DO NOT STAY IN AIRBNB’s or short term lets. Anything that could be a full-time home is contributing to to aggressive displacement of local residents. Hotels, apart hotels and traditional bed and breakfasts can cater to your every need and desire, often they cost less.
Chicken Skoop
Have you ever had a gluten free freshly pressed waffle cone? No? Well me either before I came across the legends that are Chicken Skoop.
Everything is gluten free apart from the BBQ sauce and there are vegan options - make sure to let them know you’re coeliac though and they’ll make sure it’s super safe for you.
The location of the stand is pretty obvious so you shouldn’t struggle with this one.
Moskito Spanish Bites
Moskito have a good selection of goodies over on their stand, they have separated fried and prepped bravas and gluten free buns for their chorizo burger, you’re in for a real treat here.
Mana Poke
Is you fancy something a little bit different to the usual fried foods at the street food venues, why not grab yourself a poke bowl, there are fish and veggie options.
Mana Poke is a bit of a staple Ediburgh Street food, most of the menu can be adapted to be gluten free. I recommend the tofu firecracker bowl.
Edinburgh Street Food
Whilst not a fringe special, this does count as street food and it’s very central.
Do you want oodles of choice in a hyper casual venue? Get yourself across to ESF at the back of the Omni Centre, it’s open from 10am every day in August- so you can even grab BRUNCH.
There’s an allergen book which will break down the ingredients in every dish served, which makes it extremely easy to order.
My recommendation is always Junk.
TUPINIQUIM
Green Police Box, Lauriston Place, Edinburgh EH3 9AU
Tupi is another year long staple in Edinburgh, but it’s relatively near pt fringe venues 100% gluten free food stall Tupi never disappoints, grab yourself a sweet or savoury crepe (both amazing) and wander around The Meadows.
This one is absolutely top of my list for an amazing takeaway lunch option. There are vegan, veggie and dairy free options too.
If you are there on a Friday/Saturday right around the corner from Tupi is DYNODOUGH - 100% gluten free pizza stall that is an absolute must for any trip. Picture below.
